Things to do in Columbia

Columbia is filled with many exciting festivals, theatres, museums and attractions.

Attractions + Museums
The Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a must-see for all those who visit or live in the Midlands. One of the Top 10 zoos in the United States, Riverbanks is home to some 2000 animals. The zoo does not use cages but rather simulates natural habitats with water and ravines to keep the animals at a safe distance from visitors. The artificial environments created at Riverbanks range from an underwater sea kingdom to a desert, and a microscopic rainforest and Southern farm are also on display.

The Botanical Gardens are the zoo's newest addition. The Gardens boast a colorful array of flora and fauna found throughout the world. "The Lights Before Christmas" have become a favorite holiday festival with Columbians. The 150,000 colored lights are placed around the zoo to accent the trees and Gardens, and are strung in realistic animal shapes throughout the exhibit.

South Carolina State Museum
This Museum is the largest and most diverse depository in the state. The museum is housed in what was once the first all-electric textile mill. The mill, which was under construction from 1893-1896, was later converted for use by the State Museum. Collections consist entirely of art with a state affiliation, defined as a work by a South Carolina artist or with a South Carolina theme. The museum houses many noteworthy pieces, including a BMW 318i painted Carolina Blue with white interior to reflect the colors of the state flag. Complete with floormats imprinted with an outline of the shape of the state, the car was the first BMW manufactured in the new plant outside of Greenville and was donated to the museum by the company's CEO.

Five Points
One of Columbia's best-known attractions is the area known as Five Points. Adjacent to the USC Campus, it caters largely to a young and collegiate crowd with its many nightclubs and bars. The area has become a focal point for national talent scouts since the discovery of Hootie and the Blowfish.

Festivals
  • Mayfest: An outdoor celebration held at Finlay Park marks the transition from spring to summer. Each year the festival has live entertainment and food.
  • Riverfest: Riverfest gives outdoor enthusiasts something to look forward to; its 10K foot race is held along the shore of the historic Riverfront canal. The event, which also provides arts and crafts, food and concerts, is highly popular with Columbians.
  • State Fair: Each October the State Fair returns to the capital city. Residents from all over the state look forward to the event each year, anticipating the grandstand entertainment, agricultural exhibits and traditional rides, games and prizes.
